Then and Now

At The Woods the Luncher year in Montessori is an adventure--really many adventures!

Learning how to be a classroom helper.

Balancing when to help-- and when to step back.

Reviewing Practical Life Exercises to build coordination and concentration.

Identifying fruits, then slicing and chopping them to develop hand-eye coordination before serving them for snack. Fruit Salad Day--Yum!

Visiting the kitchen to learn about hot lunch on Thursdays.

Meeting special teachers,

and learning art, music, PE, and world language with them.

Lunchers celebrate!

There's Grandparents Day,

Halloween,

Diwali,

Thanksgiving,

Christmas,

Chinese New Year,

Valentine's Day,

and Easter.

Don't forget Earth Day--

April 22 and everyday! We're growing beans, tomatoes, basil, carrots, and zucchini in our garden.

Celebrate friends often-- even planning pizza, dessert and lemonade parties!

Luncher year is a time to consolidate skills and learn new ones in all areas of the curriculum.

Lunchers learn to use a graph to compare the diameter and height of the Knobbless Cylinders.
Is this math?

Yes! Montessori math includes work with all four processes:

addition,

subtraction,

multiplication and division.

Math also includes

measurement,

geometry,

linear counting and

money. Can you identify and exchange pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters?

Use technology to sequence

make graphs,

and solve problems.

Practice letters and sounds with the Moveable Alphabet, rhymes, opposites, games, and Lexia.

Learning phonograms,

the Farm Game (grammar and the function of words),

as well as reading sentences

and books will help build reading fluency.

Lunchers hope to become readers. They also like listening to great read aloud stories as well as biographies. Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, and Thomas Edison are favorites!

Lunchers are kind and responsible. They are leaders and role models for their younger classmates.

Lunchers are curious!

They explore magnetism, electric circuits, hydrating crystals, magic sand,

and simple machines.

The Lunchers went "out" to find out more about favorite artists,

Abraham Lincoln,

reptiles,

and amphibians.

They build sculptures like Alexander Calder

and paint like Piet Mondrian

and Jackson Pollock.

Most importantly,

they wonder about a world bigger than Montessori.

It's a delight to learn about people and places!

It's a time to appreciate nature,

friendship,

and opportunities to help others.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."   Helen Keller

All year long

the Lunchers discovered you can't succeed unless you "have a go!"

"Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." --Thomas Edison

Sharing this year together was amazing!
