Summer Reading

Congratulations to all our Lunchers! We know you will love first grade--but before you think about your new space, make sure you fill your summer with great books!

Summer is a great time for all kinds of reading--

from sharks to whales to dinosaurs.

Take a trip to your library and explore the shelves.

You will find both fiction and non-fiction picture books.

Some stories will be funny;

some might have cute characters;

some might even be scary!

You can also use the links at the bottom of this page to check out the Montessori and first grade reading lists. 

Montessori can investigate all kinds of forest stories.

Rising first graders can enjoy many mouse characters!

Mrs. Powers and Mrs. Gerber hope you will use the reading lists as a launch into more great books this summer. And, if you find a special story you would like to share with us, bring it to Open House on Monday, August 31,

First Grade Reading List

STEAM into Spring!

STEAM is the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. It gives context to curriculum, making it meaningful and engaging.

You can find STEAM on a "field trip" to McCrillis Garden,

at The National Gallery of Art,

or right in the Montessori classrooms!

S is for Science:

Observing ladybugs

and chicks,

and parts of a Lima bean seed,

asking questions,

experimenting,

wondering,

and predicting are essential.

Look closely!

Use all your senses!

Find the perfect habitat--wetlands!

This water is moving too fast for frog eggs!

Amphibian or reptile?

Classification!

T is for technology:

Working with iPads,

ELMO,

and Everyday Math Games.

E is for engineering:

Binomial and Trinomial Cubes

Observe the shape and the space!

Is it art or engineering when we create wire sculptures like Calder?

A is for art:

Looking closely at cherry blossoms

Sketch what you see!

Include detailed parts of the flower!

Draw like Georgia O'Keefe!

Learn the names of musical instruments

and keep the rhythm with Native American drums.

M is for mathematics:
